Celebrating Naturopathic Medicine Week

What is a Naturopathic Doctor? Six facts you may not know...

Naturopathic doctors are primary care providers and receive similar training to medical doctors

1 - Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are medically trained professionals who clinically treat patients through a natural approach.

2 - NDs must earn an undergraduate degree before completing four years of post-graduate training at an approved school of Naturopathic Medicine. They must then pass rigorous, standardized North American licensing exams before earning the privilege to practice as a Naturopathic Doctor.

3 - NDs are trained to diagnose, do annual checkups, order lab tests, and prescribe clinically-tested medicines. NDs can also refer you to other health professionals, if required.

4 - You’re not turning your back on conventional when you see a Naturopathic Doctor. NDs are a vibrant part of Canada’s healthcare system — a system that allows for the best of both worlds. These worlds are complementary.

5 - Naturopathic Medicine isn’t new and it’s not a remedy. Naturopathic Medicine dates back 2,400 years to Hippocrates who used nature to stimulate the body's natural healing power. Today, Naturopathic Medicine blends scientific knowledge with traditional and natural medicine.

6 - NDs don’t just treat symptoms; they assess and investigate your symptoms to uncover the root cause of your disease. Their natural focus allows them to look at your physical and emotional makeup, environment, and lifestyle — all keys to unlocking the underlying cause of illness.
